Kindergarten Classes

Hello, and welcome to my Kindergarten page. Here I will post the lessons and activities that I will be working on with my kindergarten students. I will try to be as detailed as I can, so that if a child misses my class, the work can still be completed. The activities listed here are intended to bring an element of fun to the learning process, and to foster good learning habits that will make future years in school enjoyable and successful for the students.

October

This month we are exploring the alphabet. We will watch videos, sing the alphabet song, have alphabet treasure hunts, and other exciting activities that will help the students learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make.

Activities this month:

1. Alphabet Treasure Hunt - I will place letters of the alphabet around the classroom in different places and in random order. Then I will call different letters of the alphabet and have the students look around the room and find them. This activity builds on recognizing letters when the name of the letter is heard.

2. Watch Videos/Sing Songs - I have a few short videos that go through the letters of the alphabet and talk about their sounds. These videos will not take up the whole class, and will be used as a means for exploring the alphabet and words that begin with the sounds the letters make. The songs that we sing will be used to practice the names of the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make.

3. Alphabet Sounds Train Station - Students will be given letters of the alphabet and taught the sounds they make. At the end of the lesson students will pick a letter of the alphabet from a box, and I will call out sounds of the letters. The student holding the letter that makes the sound I call out will line up at the train station. Once the students are all in line, they will march around the room like a train. While marching, they will practice letter sounds that go with the letters I call out.

4. Alphabet Soup - I will pass out cards to the students with letters of the alphabet written on them, then I will put some pictures of some foods in a pile on a desk at the front of the class. There will be a small bucket next to the pile of pictures. I will call a student to come to the front of the class with their letter, and ask them to find a food that contains a sound made by their letter. When they find one, they will put the picture and their letter into the bucket. At the end, we will discuss our "alphabet soup" and what is in it.
